How to Build a Hanging Spice Rack ( and a RYOBI giveaway!)

My kitchen spices have never ever really had that dedicated place to ‘live’.

They’re  kind of just dumped everywhere and anywhere. IKEA containers, empty drawers, overhead cabinets, kitchen countertops, you name it! Always scattered and never all in the same place at the same time

Because I’m very much a ‘cook out of necessity kind of person’, this has never been a huge issue. But for my husband (who bizarrely enjoys cooking), this isn’t the case.

He likes order, consistency and knowing exactly where to look for ingredients when whipping together a meal for the family.

Of course, I love when he offers to cook (what gal wouldn’t?), so in an effort to keep his enthusiasm going, here’s how I solved our, his conundrum.

 

 

I designed an easy to make hanging spice rack for all our kitchen cooking spices. It can even hold the plastic packaged spices (you know the ones you open but can’t be bothered to empty into a decent looking container).

 

 

This wooden spice rack was built mostly from plywood. I’ll talk you through how  below! FYI: I drew up the plans and took a back seat on this project – someone had to take pictures 😉 !

 

MATERIALS YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE A HANGING SPICE RACK:

• 1 x sheet of hardwood plywood (5.5 x 606 x 1220mm)
• 1 X hardboard sheet (3mm x 607 x 1220)
• Dowel rod (6 x 9 x 2400mm)
• Nails
• screws (40mm long)
• IKEA GRUNDTAL bar
• Curtain hooks
• Wallpaper  – This is the exact one I had bought a while back

 

 

TOOLS NEEDED:

• RYOBI circular saw
• RYOBI drill- (this is the power tool you can win by entering the giveaway below)
• 10mm drill peice
• RYOBI Miter saw
• 90 Degrees angle clamp
• C clamp

 

HOW TO MAKE A HANGING SPICE RACK:

1.First, you’ll need to measure and cut the plywood sheet to your desired length. These are the measurements for the spice rack we built, w: 50cm h: 40cm, D 8.6cm

 

Use the circular saw (along with a thick piece of wood clamped in place as a guide) to cut 5 similar length plywood strips

 

 

Thankfully, most Ryobi power tools come with a ONE PLUS battery that fits all so we were able to cut all our wood in the garden without the drama of having to worry about where to plug in our tools.

 

 

This is what you should end up with.

 

 

2. Cut 100mm off the height of two of the wooden plywood pieces with a miltre saw (or jigsaw) – these will become the shorter sides of the spice rack.

 

 

3. Drill a 10mm sized hole with your drill  into the shorter length of wood (the ones that will become the spice rack sides). These holes are for the insertion of the dowel rods.

4. Start assembling the outline of your spice rack (the end aim is rectangular shaped box) . You may find this part easier to do with a right angle clamp to ensure all your angles are exactly 90 degrees.

 

 

Pre-drill two holes at the corners of your wood and secure in place with 40mm screws.

 

 

Your middle shelf should be positioned at the centre of your rectangle as seen below

 

 

5. Add your backing by tracing your spice rack outline, and cutting with a saw. I chose to wallpaper the back with some modern style wallpaper, but this step is completely optional.

Use nails to attach your backing in place and then slip your dowel rods through your pre-drilled holes and cut to size.

 

The last thing you need to do (again optional) is attach the rail to the underside of the spice rack (which I had  already spray painted black). Do this by pre-drilling 4 holes with a drill and screwing in place.

Don’t forget to slip on your curtain hooks before assembling the rail together.

 

 

Secure the finished spice rack to the wall with wall plugs and screws… and add your spices!

 

 

Wasn’t that easy?? And using power tools, makes everything so much quicker!
