I wish I could say my love for all things industrial has started to tail off, but it hasnt! I’m still very much obsessed and my sons room is still very much feeling the brunt of it. Not to say my son minds this sudden style takeover. Industrial designing involves lots of cool looking numbers and he just loves numbers. I call him my little mathematician.

So, so far his industrial-rustic themed room has a wooden plank wall for atmosphere, an under bed toy box for storage, a metallic effect window valance, an IKEA hacked industrial cube for his clothes and what else…hmm oh yeah this awesome hanging light I created from a super large industrial Bobbin!

I just love it! It adds so much more character to his room!

As you can see, the bobbin is holding up the light (which is essentially a lamp plugged in across the room) and the lamp wire has been threaded through the pipes.

Can you believe this is actually a PVC pipe? We spray painted it to get the metallic look.

This is quite a quick project to do and you really can tailor it to suit you so this tutorial is not set in stone. I’ll talk you through it.

Materials I Used

2 x PVC pipes 22mm x 2m

1 x 90 degree elbow 22mm

22mm Nail clips

Black primer and silver spray paint

Black wire cage light (3m cabel length)

Hammer

Ronseal Clear varnish (poly)

Wall plugs, washers

Screws

How To

The large industrial bobbin was sourced off eBay. First I gave it a good clean down and then varnished it.

Using wall plugs, washers and very long screws, the bobbin was secured in place into the wooden wall at one end, where there were four holes.

I then proceeded making the PVC pipes and pipe corners look less like PVC. I spray painted one coat of the black spray paint. I let that dry then spayed the metallic paint on top – but not evenly to achieve more of a rough look.

This was my spray paint combo. Once the pipe and corner was dry I sealed with varnish

Next, the pipe was attached to the wall and hammered in place using the nail clips.

As I mentioned earlier the light itself was a lamp with a 4m wire and socket at the end. My husband had to unscrew the socket from the wire, thread it through the pipe and then attach the socket on once it was all in place.

The pipe extended straight down to the floor skirting board and the 90 angle was used along with some more pipe to take it directly to the plug-in socket.

I then hung the pendant light from a little cup hook that I screwed into the bobbin.

And there you have it!

And here’s how the light looks when its switched on. Its actually quite calming and relaxing… and I should know. I find all excuses in the world to spend time in my sons room – snuggled up with him in the bed haha!

I wish I could show you the whole room but its not finished yet. So I hope you’ll keep following along! Mega excited about revealing his room this month!

I’d be even more excited if you shared this project with all your friends (share link are a top of the post). Thanking you!

  2. Hi, Beautiful job on all of your industrial projects for your bambino’s room!? I am in the middle of redoing my son’s room also, he’s 9, and I like you try and find ways to make it cute without breaking the bank! My question to you is where did you get the light itself? I read through the tutorial twice to make sure I just didn’t miss it before I bothered you ? I noticed the light bulb is like those Edison ones, I love those ! Great job again! My son doesn’t have any ceiling lighting in his room so something like this idea would be a cool way to add more light ! God Bless !

    1. Thank you so much Nina! I actually bought the light bulb from ebay – by searching edison/industrial bulbs. Some lamps also sell the light bulbs with the lamp itself.

  3. That is beautiful!! I so love that style and would love to do my kitchen over with it! Thank you for sharing with us at the #HomeMattersParty
