HOW TO  STENCIL CONCRETE FLOORS – FOR A FAUX TIMBER EFFECT

Where my shop is located, its just another warehouse with ugly concrete floors. Here is a picture of how the floor looked before I decided to stencil them with paint.

I just recently bought 5 different stencil pattern rollers to sell and play with. One of them was a wood grain pattern which is what I decided to use to create this faux stencilled flooring. UPDATE! I no longer sell these but similar rollers can be found here.

I used Websters Chalk Paint Powder in my own colour choice and added it to Antique White from Dulux Paints (be sure to follow the directions on the packaging for direct quantities ) .

What is Websters Chalk Paint Powder you might be asking? Its a natural powder that goes into any e paint colour in any brand of acrylic paint. The area I covered using the roller measured 3m x 2m and I can say that I didn’t even use 250mls of paint maybe half!

I applied the paint with a  roller starting from the top of edge of the floor and worked my way down to the bottom edge of the floor. I did this in columns as you can see from my picture below. As long as you have enough paint on your roller, you dont need to to back on yourself

After completing, I realised the paint had dried up almost instantly. I decided to leave it and not seal it seeing as it was concrete and paint is normally hard to come off concrete. I also loved how raw it looked and didn’t want a sheen to it.

However, if your floor is constantly in use, you can seal it with any floor vanish or poly just to be on the safe side! I have plans to go over it again, introducing maybe one other colour , just to give it more depth to the grain affect.

  1. The rollers you linked to on Amazon all say they are for walls. I guess they’d work on floors also. I love your floor and I’d love to have the exact roller you used. Does the company ship to U.S.? Thanks.

  2. Hi
This looks really good. How did this hold up on your shop floor? I am thinking of doing this in my basement.

  3. How do you get into the edges around the wall where your roller can’t get to? I love this, but am scared of what the edge work will be.

  4. This looks great. Considering doing in my entertainment area. Part of it is uncover, part not.
Did you put a vase coat down first?
How did you keep a straight line?
Best way to seal on concrete exposed to elements?

    Thanks

  5. Love, love, love this!! Any idea if this concept would work on existing vinyl flooring? I’ve seen that people do paint or stencil over vinyl but this is by far the neatest most real looking faux wood look I’ve seen yet. Obviously it would need numberous top coats of a sealer (especially in a kitchen, which it where I’d be be looking to do this)… but I’m wondering how well the chalk paint would adhere to the vinyl? Any thoughts, tips or ideas?
    Thank you in advance!

  6. Sandra, I lone the look of wood grain on your floors. I have a outside building that I am in the process of making into my craft room. Right now the floor is wood subfloor material and I was wondering if I would be able to use the chalk paint on the wood in my room??

  7. I LOVE the floor. I’ve used Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint, but have never seen stencils such as you used on the floor. I have a screened in porch across the back of my small house in Florida (USA) with a truly ugly concrete floor and this would look great. Where can I purchase these stencils? Help help help cure the ugly porch floor.

    1. Hi Barabra, these stencils are amazing and so simple to use. Im in Australia and these where exclusive to Websters Chalk Paint Powder stockist to re sell. I would suggest that you contact Websters and see if they will be launching them in America. If not send me your details and ill be more than happy to find out how much it will cost to send them to you.

  8. How did you keep your roll wet with paint? Did you stop and start? How did you keep the paint even if you stopped and started?

    1. Hi Melissa, these are foam rollers which hold a fair bit if paint in them i brushed the paint onto the roller, just the amount of paint that a medium brush would hold, i didnt take any off so with a wet brush i brushed the paint on turning the foam roller as i would apply. I was able to do 2 x 3m long rown with the 1 application then i would repeat the process. I did stop and start in 2 sections only because i lost my footing lol but when i connected again it only looks like joins. If i did that instead of continuous rows it would of still looked pretty good if not more real.
