…………………….
I have a confession to make.
I like to collect baking tins…. Large ones, small ones, round ones, square ones, pastry ones. I like them all and I’ve built up quite the collection this past year.
But here’s where it gets super weird. I don’t bake. I can’t bake. And that’s not to say I haven’t tried because I really have!
There was that time I attempted to make a peach cake for my wedding anniversary and spent the majority of the evening trying to digest what felt like a rock. Or the time when I thought adding a cup of salt to my sponge cake mix would cancel out the extra cup of sugar I had added by mistake …..
I guess its true what they say…’one does not simply try baking’. And that ‘one really can scar ones husbands for life if one doesn’t stop trying to prove otherwise’.
So at this point you’re probably thinking, if this chic isn’t using these tins to bake cakes, why on earth is she collecting them? Well, for repurposing reasons …obviously. (CLICK HERE FOR ANOTHER BAKING TIN UPCYCLE IDEA)
And because I just like baking tins – which we’ve kind of already established right?
10 MINUTE DIY CHALLENGE
Its that time again! You know, where myself and 6 other bloggers get together to make something totally awesome in just 10 mins? Last month’s theme was all about organising and this months theme is planters!
Can you guess what I did?
I’ll just tell you, as this is kinda out there as far as ideas go. Inspired by this image on Pinterest, I took the largest baking tin from my collection and upcycled it into a herb planter for my kitchen. I’ll show you how!
You can see what my other blogging friends made for this quick DIY challenge by scrolling right to the bottom of this post.
MATERIAL USED TO MAKE THIS HERB PLANTER
This post contains affiliate links for your convenience – please see full disclosure here
- Baking tin – mine was an 8″ one
- Sharpie pen
- Gravel/Stones
- Potting soil
- Herbs selection: you can buy a variety from here.
- IKEA FISKBO picture frame (just the plastic sheet insert) or you can just buy the polymer plastic sheets
- Scissors
- Gorilla glue
HOW TO MAKE A BAKING TIN HERB PLANTER:
1. Place your baking tin on a hard surface and then your plastic sheet on top.
2. With your sharpie pen, draw around the baking tin (alternatively you can just flip the baking tin on to the plastic and draw an outline that way). Your final shape should resemble a semi circle.
FYI – this is what the IKEA FISKBO fame looks like.
3. Cut the shape out with very sharp scissors. Try not to rush this part, or the plastic will crack!
4. Next apply a thin line of gorilla glue around the baking tin edges and stick your plastic semi circle over it. The glue takes about 20-30 sec seconds to dry (and a day to cure). Ensure you press the plastic down hard to get a really good seal – you don’t want water leaking out.
5. Add in stones and gravel to the base of your herb planter for water drainage (you can read more about indoor herb growing here if you are a beginner at this)
Add a layer of potting soil and then plant your herbs!
I chose parsley, rosemary and mint. They smell unbelievable in my kitchen!
You can either lean your herb planter against the wall on your countertops or hang on the wall. I chose to hang it buy pre-drilling a small hole at the top centre and hammering into the wall with a heavy duty nail!
What’s your verdict? Are you liking this repurposed baking tin idea?
Since I started out with a confession, I feel it only right to end with a promise to repent my sins and change my weird baking tin fetish ways.
In other words, no more late nights phone prowling….. err I mean scrolling eBay for baking pans to buy. When my ‘purchase thumb’ gets that uncontrollable urge to tap ‘BID’; I’ll just stick it in my mouth instead and revert back to my thumb sucking days (oops now that’s two confessions!)

IKEA HACK: INDUSTRIAL WALL PLANTER
The best idea and so affordable. Thanks for linking up with #TuesdayTreasures
if I did, I’d do exactly what you have done. They are so fun and such a great pop of color against the white walls. And if you get bored, you can just rip it off and start over! Visiting from Redo It Yourself Inspiration party.
Love love love it! Did it ever leak since you created this post?
What about watering the plants? Will the water spill out or will there be mold?
Great idea. I used a jello mold for one of my favorite planters, check it out on my site
Does the glue have to cure before the planting peg is?
Yes let it cure before planting anything 🙂
Great stuff, lot of interesting ideas in here. Will have to try some of this out myself as I have a lot of the stuff already laying around. Particularly like the DIY take as it adds a nice element of owernship to my gardening projects.
Thank you 🙂
This is pretty cool 🙂 Does the Gorilla Glue ever fall off though?
What do you use for the wall hanger?
I drilled a hole into the top of the baking tin and then nailed it into the wall with a heavy duty nail
That is so cool! I love how it looks! 🙂 Lisa
So creative! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks!
I love this idea! Thanks for sharing it with us at Funtastic Friday! I featured it as my “favorite” in Funtastic Friday 116 🙂
Cake pans all over are totally destined to become herb gardens after seeing this beauty! LOVE this!
I’ve featured you this weekend on DIY Salvaged Junk 367. Thanks for linking up!

Thank you so much for the feature!
I see a lot of these round cake pans at second hand shops, now I know what to do with them.
Yes go for it!
I absolutely love this project! I don’t love to bake either, but I do love to cook, and I’ve got plenty of baking tins lying around. So glad I found you over at Oh My Heartsie Girls Wonderful Wednesday. Pinned your project!
Thank you so much!
Genius! Thanks for sharing this great idea on Funtastic Friday!
This looks great. I would feel nervous about how water tight I could make it but definitely want to give it a try! #TuesdayTreasures
This is such a cute planter! I have a piece of plastic that I could re-purpose for this, so I think I’ll be giving this a go this week! #TuesdayTreasures
Thank you!
Medina, I absolutely love this idea!! So happy you linked up to our #OMHGWW, without a doubt my favourite from last week, so happy to have you as my feature this week! http://fromevijawithlove.com/2017/02/21/turquoise-cabinet-wonderful-wednesday/
Thank you so much Evija!
I love how you made this hanging herb planter. The plastic sheet so you can peek in is so clever. Thank you for linking up with us at the #HomeMattersParty – hope to see you back again this Friday when the new party opens.
Thank you Nicole!
This is just a genius idea!! I am in love with that planter!
And I love your story of the salt 🙂 I may have tried similar stuff too… shhhh…
And I can’t keep plants alive… so you are one step ahead of me.. haha
haha thanks Anika!
Lol that was such an entertaining post. I connect with you regarding the baking pans. I can’t stop myself from buying them. I literally go crazy when I enter the baking supplies section. I start grabbing everything that I love until my husband literally drags me away from there. I have a lot of baking tins sittin in my kitchen. This would make such a lovely project.

Thank You Lubna.. and glad I’m not the only one!
What an ingenious idea! Love the planter. I’m a good cook but a rubbish baker. Baking is more like a science you have to be precise whereas cooking to me is more of an art you can improvise more.
Love how you managed to sneak a bit of IKEA in there too!
Thanks Claire. I do agree with that last statement!
Oh my gosh girl that made me laugh so hard, 1 cup of salt… But I was laughing with you. When I baked my first chocolate cake (my best chocolate cake one) it was a total and complete fail. Instead of buttermilk my mom always used sour milk that she made from half canned milk and half water (you know to save money when you have 9 kids). So I go ask her how do I make sour milk and she says (or what I heard) “half a cup of canned milk and vinegar” so that’s exactly what I put in the cake mix. It turned out like brownies, bitter, nasty brownies. My dad ever the sweet tooth and being supportive said it was the best cake he’d ever eaten, and he did eat all of that cake because no one else would touch it.
Your planter is lovely, what a great idea for vintage or new baking tins 🙂
Haha Toni, your comment made me laugh too. Arent our husbands great for just putting up with our cooking disasters!?
Such a clever idea! Love it!
Thank you 🙂
Genius as always Medina!!
Thanks Brittany!
This is very, very cool!
