Hello Everyone! I ripped the carpet up in my bedroom and much to my great surprise ” Voila ” plywood. So, I’ve decided to stain it with mahogany stain, but you know how dark mahogany is, and I would really like to put it on thin so as to let the wood grain still show through… I’m not sure what I should use to make it thin enough.. then of course after I’m finnished, I’m going to put a gloss polyurethane on it .. any suggestions on what I can use to thin it out with?

    Hi Debe,

I never tried it myself but I read several forums on the subject, and the experts recommend thinning stain with mineral spirits.
If possible, test it on a separate piece of plywood and wait 24 hours until the wood absorbs all the stain revealing the final color. You can always go darker by applying more coats. Good luck!
